Anthropology > ESSAY > 3 page essay: Topic-Heteronormativity (All)
Pick one key concept from the second half of the unit (‘Discourse’ or ‘Heteronormativity’) and create a short profile of that concept. Your profile should address the following: 1. What does ... the word mean? How might it be useful in the study of gender and/or sexuality? 2. Reflect on your own experience in relation to that concept OR discuss how that concept could help you think critically about a popular text of your own choosing. All profiles should engage with 2-4 readings from the unit of study. This should be written in the style of a short essay. You should aim to: • Demonstrate an accurate, comprehensive and detailed understanding of those 2-4 readings. • Appropriately apply and think critically and/or creatively with at least one of those readings. • Make appropriate links to other readings/ideas from the unit of study. • Express yourself in a way that is clear, compelling and well edited. Profiles should be appropriately referenced and accompanied by a complete list of references. Referencing FAQs 1. How many academic sources do I need? 2-4 reference from the unit of study reading list. At least 2 of them should be ‘compulsory’ readings (unless you have talked to your tutor about a different combination in advance of submitting your work). 2. What referencing system should I use? Any official referencing system used accurately and consistently is going to be ok with us. If you are not already familiar with a referencing system feel free to ask your tutor for advice. 3. If all my sources are from the unit reader, do I still need a reference list/bibliography? Yes! You definitely need to provide a correctly formatted reference list for your profile. 4. If the readings are from the unit of study reader, do we use the reader page numbers of the page numbers from the original source? The page numbers from the original source. 5. I am not 100% sure of referencing rules at The University of Sydney. Where do I find out more? Start by reading the Unit of Study outline (available through a link on Canvas). There is a lot of information about what we are looking for in there, and links to more resources. 6. Can I analyse more than one popular text? Sure... but you really need to think about that choice before you make it. 750 words is not very long, and if you spread yourself too thin you'll likely end up with a weaker analysis. Arguments tend to work best if they're grounded in specifics. You want to go deep rather than broad! That will give you the best basis for demonstrating the kinds of skills we're looking for in the higher grade brackets. [Show More]
