Each) Define the following terms: Culture Culture is the agreed upon systems of agreed-upon meanings that serve as recipes,or guidelines, for beahvior in any particular society. Cultural Relativism Cultural realativism is the belief that any particular set of customs, values, and moral precepts are relative to a specific cultural tradition, and that they can only be understood and evaluated within that particular milieu. This is the tendency to adopt a very tolerant attitude toward all manner of foreign customs and beliefs. Ethnocentrism Ethnocentrism is the tendency to evaliate other cultural practices from the vantage of one’s own culture. This can cause the misrepresentation of others by viewing them through the prisim of one’s own culture. Intra-cultural Variation Intra-cultural variation is the diversity of conduct within particular societies. This also exaines the implications that the variations have for anthropological theory. Intra-cultural variation helps us understand how societies change over time and how the variation in behaviors take on special significance. Fieldwork Those who intend to become anthropologists are expected to live a year or more with a community until they have a satisfactory understanding of their society and culture, or at least the facets of their way of life that they deem worthy of detailed investigation. Fieldwork is the specialized way anthropologists collect their primary data and gain intimate and personal knowledge of these communities. This allows anthropologists to get both an emic and etic perspective.
