Many leaders hesitate to show vulnerability to their team. Discuss at least one way that
you could show vulnerability as a leader to your team. How could this help you connect
with your team in a positive manner?
In addition, what type of healthcare delivery system would you implement for your
team? Discuss the rationale for your choice.
Many leaders hesitate to show vulnerability, because they relate it to weakness. Weakness and
vulnerability are two different things. In leadership, if vulnerability is shown, it brings relief for
others looking up to the leader. Also, being vulnerable allows management to be closer and
relate to patients, which builds rapport because patients are vulnerable also (Younie, 2016).
Showing vulnerability shows that you are human, and it makes it less intimidating to come to
the manager with any issues, problems, or feelings that the team has. One way to be vulnerable
is to own up to your mistakes and share them. Sharing your failures whether as a floor nurse or
a manager, and the lesson you learned from those failures, shows that you have been in their
shoes before and you understand what they are going through. Acting like you are superior to
your team shows that you are insensitive and better than they are.
No matter if I am in an inpatient, outpatient, or long-term care facility I would want to utilize a
full range leadership theory. This theory utilizes transactional, transformational, and laissez-faire
leadership styles. There is a time and place for all of those styles. Transactional leadership is
good to complete short term tasks, transformational is good to complete long-term vision of the
hospital or unit, and laissez-faire is good for delegations and unit councils to come up with
solutions to problems (Marquis & Huston, 2017).
