1-2 Journal: Prewriting for Poetry Submission 1 #2 The Doll The porcelain doll was given to me by the most important person in my life. My grandmother lovingly crocheted the dress, a lovely purple ... with small white flowers on the skirt. There was a white underskirt and white on the bonnet that lazily draped down on each side. Her brown hair was braided by the arthritis swollen knuckles of my grandmother. She’d sat for weeks each evening meticulously following the stich pattern to create the lovely party dress for the porcelain doll. She looked tiny curled up in the overstuffed chair each night after the work was done in the garden and around the house. The wringer washer had caught her finger once or twice making the one she held the hook with slightly crooked. Measuring the doll with each piece of the pattern she would make the clothes just the right size. The doll had been chosen by her for this project and only this one was porcelain. All the other dolls were plastic with fake plastic hair. The porcelain doll had real hair and red cheeks, her eyes were blue, but grandmother sat and carefully repainted them brown. The hands and feet were porcelain, while the body was stuffed and soft. She’d finished the dress of purple and white, and carefully dressed the doll. Her slender fingers struggled with he tiny button shed affixed to the back as she fastened it together. Next the bonnet with a single hair pin that held it firmly atop the head. Each braid she’d made bore a purple ribbon on then end tied with a tiny bow. Under the dress was the white under skirt which tied at the waist of the doll and a pair of white booties, one for each foot. [Show More]
