NR 504-Week 4 Discussion.docx
For this week’s discussion, I am choosing to discuss displaying a bad attitude as an incompetent behavior. J.J. is a nurse in a busy pediatric primary care clinic. J.J. becomes very anxious when the clinic has to implement any kind of change. The clinic staff recently learned that they will be implementing barcode scanners for medication administration. There will be a significant change in the process of medication administration. Previously, the nurse would be able to draw up the medication or vaccine in the med room and document before entering the patient room. Now, the nurse must draw up the medication or vaccine in the room, scan the patient, document, and administer it to the patient. This new process takes more time. J.J. is very upset and keeps making comments to the charge nurse that this process will not work in the busy clinic. J.J. makes it a point to tell everyone in the clinic how is feeling about the new change. J.J. is getting everyone worked up about the change and everyone is viewing the change in a negative manner.
As J.J.’s manager, I would sit down with J.J. and discuss his apprehension toward the new process. I would explain to J.J. the benefits of using the barcode scanners. In a study by Senol- Celik, Himket, & Unal (2017), “respondents noted strengths of health information technology, such as easing workflow and minimizing medication errors through better documentation” (p. 1105). Patient and staff safety is important in nursing practice. I would encourage J.J. to seek resources and ask for help before becoming negative or overwhelmed. I would have myself or support staff available in the clinic on the “go-live” day. This will ease some anxiety and apprehension when using the scanners. It is important to keep an open line of communication with J.J. and staff. Communication is vital in promoting a healthy work environment, but it is also helpful with staff retention (Korth, 2016). As a nurse leader, it is crucial to promote a positive work environment. I would hope that J.J. sees the value of working in a positive environment and how his behavior can influence others.
