Week 8: Pharmacology for Psychological Disorders Review for the different classes: How they will affect the patient, side effects (major side effects), when to use vs when not to use for the following: • Antipsychotics 1st generation/conventional-categorized as low, medium, and high potency. Effective but bad side effects. Note – according to textbook – Although 1st gen antipsychotics have less EPS effects which the patient will notice immediately, 2nd gen antipsychotics are more likely to have metabolic side effects which may lead to premature death or increased symptoms of DM2. o Low-chlorpromazine, thioridazine o Medium-loxapine, perphenazine o High-haloperidol, fluphenazine, trifluoperazine, thioxene o MOA: blocks dopamine (D2), Acetylcholine (Ach), Histamine, and Norepinephrine receptors o USE: schizophrenia, Bipolar manic phase, Tourette, anti-nausea, Huntington’s, Organic syndromes o SE: side effects depend on what receptor it blocks o Alpha block=hypotension o Histamine 1 block=sedation o Inhibits prolactin=galactorrhea o Muscarinic block=dry mouth, blurred vision, photophobia, urinary retention, constipation, tachycardia o Other SE: sexual dysfunction, seizures, agranulocytosis, dysrhythmias EPS, acute dystonia-spasm of face, tongue, neck, back. Cogwheel rigidity, stooped posture. Parkinson-like symptoms-bradykinesia, mask-like face, shuffling, tremor, akathisia-restless, agitated, anxious Tardive Dyskinesia-twisting, worm-like tongue. Neuroleptic Malignant Syndrome-Rigidity, increased temp, diaphoresis, increased b/p, dysrhythmias. [Show More]
