Data is raw unprocessed facts and figures that have no context or purposeful meaning. Information is processed data that has meaning and is presented in a context. It usually an answer to a concrete... question. Information has three aspects: Structured or syntactic This refers to the terminology used within the piece of information. Syntax usually describes the data used in the information. (Note: Information is still data, but with meaning and context). Example, the colours of a traffic light; red, amber and green. Semantic This refers to the meaning that is applied to the syntax of the information. Example, the colours of the traffic light; red means stop, green means go and amber means slow down. Pragmatic When we say information is pragmatic, it means that it has the ability to be used or applied in a realistic approach. Example, the traffic light, when the light is red, drivers stop. WHY IS DATA IMPORTANT? Data has become a critical resource in many organizations and therefore, efficient access to data, sharing the data, extracting the information from the data, and making use of the information has become an urgent need. Managers use the information derived from data to make important decisions about and within the organization. LEVELS/ TYPES OF INFORMATION The three levels at which information can be used are strategic, tactical and operational and there is a direct correlation between the levels of importance of individuals or groups within an organisation and the level of information that is being communicated.
