Course Description: This course is designed to provide students with the tools required to perform a comprehensive physical assessment and review of a patient’s history. Students will learn inspection, auscultation, palpation and percussion techniques. Emphasis is placed upon assessment of the well person with common health problems. Health promotion and maintenance strategies are highlighted for all age groups. The course will introduce students to the nursing process, principles of infection control and safety promotion. Pre-requisites: CHEM 100/101; STAT 113 Co-requisites: (Generic): NURS 200; NURS 240 Credits: 4 Hours: 30 hrs Lecture 30 hrs Lab 45 hrs Clinical Lecture: Tuesday 11:30-1:30pm BCW218 Lab/Clinical/Simulation: see-attached calendars and Lab/Clinical folder posted on BB for further information Faculty: Professor Barbara Ravida MSN, RNC-MS, CCRN, ANP-BC E-mail: bravida@hunter.cuny.edu BRJ618@aol.com Phone: 212-481-1424 (OFFICE) **DO NOT LEAVE MESSAGES 718-253-2674 (HOME) 718-338-3860 (CELL) Text or call Office: BCW411—hours by appointment and as posted on office door Brookdale Mailbox 1st floor---Box #881 Course Objectives/Learning Outcomes: Upon completion of this course the student will be able to: Perform comprehensive and system-focused physical assessments Analyze and interpret information gathered during history taking and physical assessment Accurately document data collected during history and physical assessment Apply the nursing process to develop a plan of care for patients with low complexity health care needs Revise the plan of care based on ongoing evaluation of patient outcomes Support the dignity and participation of patients in their own health care through shared decision making Identify leadership, advocacy and professional behaviors for the role of the Registered Professional Nurse Demonstrate understanding of the principles of asepsis and preventing the spread of infection Demonstrate safe and effective basic nursing skills in the lab and clinical settings Demonstrate ethical standards related to confidentiality and the patient’s right to privacy Demonstrate effective collaboration and communication with the patients and members of the health care team Teaching and Learning Strategies: Lecture/discussion; assigned readings and audiovisuals; PowerPoint presentations and guidelines available on Blackboard. Students will practice skills by using ShadowHealth assignments and by performing return demonstration in lab. Students will perform skills in the clinical setting on patients as directed and supervised by their clinical instructor.
