Trauma Case Study It is normal for individuals to experience a traumatic event. It cannot be predicted as to when it is going to occur, how it is going to occur, and what the individual’s initial ... response to the trauma will be. In this case study, Maryam is a 17-year-old student who caused a three-car accident and it resulted in serious injuries in one of the other drivers that was involved. She was referred by her doctor for insomnia two months after the accident. Maryam appears to be emotional, anxious, and despondent. Key Assessments The key assessment issues can be found in the screening process, which begins with the first contact with the client (Jackson-Cherry & Erford, 2018). Maryam comes to the office with dark circles under her eyes due to lack of sleep (GCU, 2019). She appeared to be anxious, tearful, tired, and had a low voice, soft speech, and flat effect (GCU, 2019). Her presenting problems are shame for causing the car accident, fear of driving, and poor self-esteem (GCU, 2019). Maryam has also been drinking three to four glasses of vodka with orange juice every night to help her sleep but is only able to sleep for two to four hours a night due to having nightmares (GCU, 2019). Due to Maryam’s drug screening result in a positive result for a substance, there should be a follow-up assessment to determine if she also has a Substance Use Disorder, which should be utilized as a guideline to manage and characterize her struggles to create an appropriate treatment plan and be able to make educated decisions regarding any treatment alternatives (Cole, 2009). Another important assessment is regarding Maryam’s safety. It is crucial for counselors to make sure their client is safe, so by Maryam’s statement that she does not deserve to live should concern counselors for her safety. [Show More]
