Summary Task 2-C731.docx.docx

Document Content and Description Below

Kevina Harris RTI Task 2 A. Identify two strategies, one for each student in the attached “Student Profiles,” that you could use in the lab to help improve reading comprehension. 1. Explain how ... your two chosen strategies could help the students improve their reading comprehension. Since Sofia is a student who struggles with reading fluency and decoding grade-level vocabulary the best strategy to use for her is reciprocal teaching. The implementation of this strategy would include classroom discussions and think-pair-share. During the classroom discussion Sofia will be able to hear how her fellow students decode the meaning of the vocabulary words, and not just their literal meaning. She will then be able to engage and comprehend the reading material better. The think-pair-share portion can be done one on one with a partner or with a teacher. Being with a partner it will be much like the whole-class discussion, but she will have more time to discuss with her partner and have more practice. If she is doing this portion with her teacher, the teacher will be able to scaffold her and lead her to decode the meanings on her own. The teacher will also be able to identify closer what can help her with fluency issues and assist her to do better. Matteo is a student whose first language is not English and is having difficulty reading heavy informational text and literature. But it has been found that when there are graphics that assist with the reading, he able to comprehend the reading better. The strategy that would work best for Matteo is storyboards. Storyboards are something that Matteo can use while reading the text. The storyboard strategy allows him to draw out what he is reading while he is reading. It a form of taking notes but in picture form. This builds on the fact that we know Matteo does better when he has graphics to assist with his reading. B. Describe two specific reading strategies that could be used to scaffold instruction for Sofia, who is described in the “Student Profiles” attachment, for the reading requirements associated with the attached “Homework Assignment.” The two specific reading strategies that would be great for scaffolding Sofia with this homework assignment would be a Questioning Web and the Somebody Wanted But So (SWBS) summary graphic organizer. The assignment requires her to come up with two questions about the Revolutionary War using the website provided as well as other educational materials. The Questioning Web can help her brainstorm the facts about the war and answer any questions she may have about the event. After she has completed the Questioning Web, an SWBS will help her organize the knowledge she has gained. She will able to breakdown the details to give her better comprehension of the event. One she has comprehended the information she will be on the right track to not only develop the questions she needs but also be properly prepared to discuss them in class. C. Provide two reading assessments for Matteo, who is described in the “Student Profiles” attachment, to monitor his progress. 1. Describe the support methods you will use to monitor Matteo’s progress. Note: The reading assessments could be formative, summative, or informal. Informal and formative assessments will be great to monitor Matteo’s performance. Informal assessment will take while he is in class. The teacher will actively observe him when he is participating in discussions and group assignments and see if he is comprehending the reading. This will let the teacher know where he is struggling with comprehension. This helps the teacher and Matteo because it is an informal observation, so he does not know that he is being observed, so he is more relaxed and less stressed. The teacher will he how he is naturally. The formal assessment will use rubrics and explicit goals. Since Matteo is good at interpreting graphs, charts, and other graphic information, for his assessment he will be given data charts and he will be given the task of interpreting the data from the charts into an academic paper. His rubric will state that key words from the lesson’s reading will have to implemented and used correctly. The rubric will let both Matteo and his teacher know what his strengths and weaknesses are.
