To complete this assessment, students are required to make a team of three (3) or four (4) students
and select a Tourism or Hotel place located in Brisbane or on the Gold Coast. The Place can be: a
resort, hotel, hostel or other form of tourist accommodation; a restaurant, café, nightclub or some
other form of food and/or beverage organisations; a theme park, sport stadium, casino, convention
centre, local park, foreshore reserve, national park, or some other form of built or natural tourist
attraction. Your tutor must approve your place prior to taking the Field Trip in week 7.
The task
You are to answer each section question by defining and explaining the theory then finding examples
at your ‘place’ that represent the theory.
The first step in building this portfolio report is to understand the various theories thoroughly (from
the readings and the lecture notes) that you need to use in each section. Please remember, the focus
of the Portfolio is theory, not a descriptive reflection of your Field Trip.
You will write answers to each of the following sections in report format including two photos for
each paragraph:
1. An investigation into the tourism place that is the subject of your Field Trip. (40 marks)
a) Place
- Define and explain the theoretical concept of Place.
- Linking to the theory by providing a description of the tourism place of your Field
Trip, including its products and/or services offered.
- Define and explain sense of place.
- Show how the elements at your Field Trip tourism place create a sense of place.

- Define and explain the theoretical concept of Access.
- Analyse how visitors can access the tourism place of your Field Trip.
- Define and explain the theoretical concept of Accessibility.
- Discuss the inclusive or exclusive elements of accessibility you found evident at
your Field Trip tourism place.

- Analyse the type of visitors and their behaviours using either Maslow’s “A theory
of human motivation” or Plog’s Allocentric/Psychocentric model.
