What exactly is cultural competence you ask, well let me explain a little more in-depth about what makes it so important and what it is? When describing culture, it is a group of people who share the same values, customs, beliefs, and religious practices. (Purnell, 2014) Being aware of cultural difference is important because this will better assist you with caring for your patients and also show your patients the proper respect and dignity they deserve. When a healthcare provider evaluates on how competent their care is one thinks it's on the way they communicate with their patients. However, this is not the case. For a provider and their nursing staff, to provide competent care to their patients, they must first look at themselves and think about the way they communicate and their behaviors towards patients. Once they have done that they are better able to identify how to speak with patients who have different cultural standards thus making them more cultural competent (Purnell, 2014). One important thing a healthcare professional can do is look at the Purnell Cultural Competence model to help improve their skills in communication and care. The Purnell Model for Cultural Competence and its organizing framework as a guide for assessing the culture of patients (Purnell, 2014).
