With the evolution toward adoption of evidence based practice (EBP) in the field of nursing, research has become increasingly central to us in all fields of nursing. The basis of EBP is being able to find, review, and critique research in order to be sure that the evidence is reliable enough to base our practice upon. Generally, when think of evidential research, we think of quantitative research, where data is collected in numeric form and often through large surveys or randomized experiments. There exists, however another sort of lesser known research called qualitative research which is described by Polit and Beck (2017) as “the investigation of phenomena, typically in and holistic fashion, through the collection of rich narrative materials using a flexible research design.” There are some who claim that qualitative research is not real science and therefore believe that it’s data lacks value. The purpose of this paper is to examine two different studies on nurse burnout for the sake of understanding and highlighting the types of information that can be gained from both a quantitative and a qualitative research approach and to describe the general advantages and disadvantages that each approach offers.
