Final Paper Info and Dropbox BASICS Due Sunday, December 9 to the Final Paper Dropbox on D2L by 10:00pm (D2L goes into maintenance from 10pm). NOTE: If you submit your final paper by Friday, Dec 7 ... at 10pm, you will get a 3 point grade bump. Length between 2500 and 3000 words (main body: not including bibliography, etc). Bibliography of at least 10 sources, 7 of which must be academic sources (books, scholarly articles, etc). You may certainly have *more* than 10 sources, provided at least 7 are academic. YOU DO NOT NEED TO ANNOTATE YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY. YOU DO NOT NEED A SEPARATE ABSTRACT/OUTLINE. I repeat: YOU DO NOT NEED TO ANNOTATE YOUR BIBLIOGRAPHY. Should be obvious, but, make sure your sources are well integrated into the body of your paper. If your quote from a source is more than a couple sentences long, you should bracket it from the main body of the paper, indent from both sides, and single-space the selection. Using long quotes is often padding and should be avoided. If you are quoting anything more than a couple sentences, it had better be important and you'd better be spending some time to unpack/analyze it. Anything that is not your own words must be clearly cited and the source attributed. Paraphasing can be dangerous - make sure not to employ too many words or mirror the sentence structure or sentence order from your sources -- doing so is plagiarism. If you want to take some directly - do it clearly and cite it. Otherwise, rewrite in your own words. Your paper should have a title. Creative is fine :) Overly long paragraphs (2/3 of a page and up) often reflect a lack of structure - be concise, think about when you have multiple ideas crowded into a paragraph -- that is often when you should split them up. .....and all previous advice from your mid-term and final draft papers (might be good to reread). Just to be even more clear (this time in red!) You MUST properly cite your sources! Any words that are not your own need to be clearly cited. Watch out for problems with paraphrasing. We want to hear YOUR voice, so be clear when you are citing someone else. Plagiarism will not be tolerated and will result in a failing grade for the paper, a reduction of one grade level for your remaining grade or a failing grade in the course, and additional Code of Academic Integrity sanctions. There are resources in the syllabus and at the link below. Please ask your TA if you have questions about how to cite and do not wait to last minute. Citation format is up to you, but be consistent with your choice of APA, MLA, Chicago styles. University of Arizona Library's Citation Guide. If you want help, ask your TA and check out the UA Writing Center. Formatting is up to you, but we recommend 1.5 space or double space text and 1"-1.5" margins. Preferred file format is Word .doc or other simple text format but NOT Apple's Pages. If you use Pages please export it as a .doc file. It is your responsibility to makes sure your file is uncorrupted and readable in D2L. Late papers will be assessed a 10% reduction at each 24-hour period after the due date: e.g., if you submit your final paper on Wednesday it will start with a 30% reduction. Late papers after Wednesday, Dec 12 at 10:00pm will not be accepted. Please refer to Content section sidebar "Final Paper Info and Dropbox" (or above, depending on where you are viewing this) for detailed instructions. Due Sunday, Dec 9 by 10pm (NOTE: If you submit your final paper by Friday, Dec 7 at 10pm, you will get a 3 point grade bump) A note on grading: Here is more detailed guidance on what separates an A from a B or a C paper, based on parameters that we use while reading. Aside from the basics of the assignment (length [2,500-3,000 words], at least seven academic sources of at least ten total sources with a properly formatted bibliography, "A" papers will do nearly all, if not all, of the following things: • Originality: highly innovative, linking ideas from the courses and other subjects to analyze a topic in new or creative ways • Writing style: readable, well-crafted sentences, balanced paragraphs with clear argumentation of a thesis or perspective, low/no use of passive voice • Evidence: relevant examples and sources, applied strongly and contextualized with in-text citation • Structure: well-thought out organization, introductory paragraph that charts the paper to come, a logical progression of points, and a clear, integrated structure leading to a concluding paragraph • Mechanics: proper use of punctuation, spelling, and grammar. no run on sentences or sentence fragments. • Formatting: detailed attention to formatting and consistent use of proper citation "B" papers will do most of the above well, but may miss one or another element, or simply perform the above tasks at a less successful level. "C" papers will have a larger set of problems, and more often than not, be missing one of the basic stipulations of the assignment. "D" papers are not doing much at all that is adequate, and "E" and below are usually the result of lateness. As noted elsewhere, plagiarism is not permissible and *you* are responsible for understanding what constitutes plagiarism (there are links/resources in Content). Remember: you can turn your paper in up to three days late, but at the start of each 24-hour interval the paper grade will be reduced by 10%. No papers will be accepted after 10pm on Wednesday, Dec 12. Good luck! [Show More]
