Hypothesis: Make a prediction for how to identify an unknown element and the chemical composition of a star. For Part I, create an explanation to describe the relationship between the identity of an element and the color of light it produces when it is heated. For Part II, create an explanation to describe the relationship between the composition of an unknown substance and its emission spectrum (line spectrum). Procedure: List the procedures of the lab in a clear, concise, and appropriate detail. Clean a platinum wire before each trial by dipping it into the test tube of hydrochloric acid and then heating the wire in the hottest part of the Bunsen burner flame until no color shows. Select a known solution from the given test tubes, and dip the clean platinum wire into the solution. Hold the wire in the hottest part of the Bunsen burner flame and observe the color produced in the flame. Record the observed color in your data table. Use the spectroscope to observe the color of flame for each of the given elements. You should be able to see the individual lines making up light emitted from the heated gases. Record the colors and wavelengths values of the elements emission line in your data table. Use the spectroscope to observe the light emitted from a star.
