Reflective Report Introduction Taking Enterprise Management for Computer Scientists (MCEL30031) was an interesting choice as I was not really sure what to expect from it. As I advanced through the ... course I started noticing that everything I learn here helps me in having a better understanding of how organisations/businesses work. Being able to read market information on particular products or services and interpreting them in an eloquent way opened a broader field of understanding for me. Finishing this course, I am certain that I will have much more employable qualities to put in my CV, even more, I believe that I will have the necessary analysing ability and understanding to be able to begin my own startup or at least comprehend the activity behind the ones I would like to join. The learning method I enjoy the best is self directed learning, the main reasons for it being that I am free to make my own choices and because I am more able to explore certain parts in the field that interest me more. Besides this, I know that limiting myself to it would not bring in all that is necessary for my studies. For this reason I try to attend the different lectures and workshops in order to see what I am missing from my methods and also to take advantage of the universities resources. Case Study 1: “PESTEL” As I delved into the material of this course I was surprised by the subject of the first case study. Analysing the UK online poker market using PESTEL is something that I have no prior experience with. The more I tried to answer the case study questions the more I realised that every single business has to account for many key factors in order to not only improve, but at least sustain itself. Now I see how essential political, economic, sociocultural, technological, environmental and legal factors are important to the UK online poker market. Discussing during the workshop with the other students what we found was an eye-opener which showed me that the details I found about the online poker market were only a few of the many statistics that are used in order to analyse it. Before starting the case study I thought of the the external environment as being just a little detail of the market, but as I searched for different PESTEL analysis factors I realised that there are many laws to look up in order to understand market value fluctuation. Environmental scanning is important to businesses as it helps them understand what the situation is both outside and inside the organisation. Identifying weaknesses, opportunities and threats makes the distribution of resources throughout the company much easier and optimal.
