They were totalitarian regimes that were led by a single party strongly linked to state institutions. 2. They were led by a charismatic character with unlimited power. 3. They made intense use of propaganda and were the sole owners of the media. 4. They were both militaristic, investing large resources in the armed forces, and they both engaged in territorial expansion. Similarities Germany & Italy 1. Both countries experienced a collapse of the parliamentary democracy, and its replacement of a largely democratic dictatorship. 2. Mussolini and Hitler both proved that they deserved a chance to improve the economy and political crises. 3. They were both determined to be the sole leader. 4. Both attempted to build their support by employing a mixture of repression and propaganda. Similarities Italy & Soviet Union Both fascism and communism oppose the liberal democratic political framework (and possibly global capitalism, although communism is much clearer on that than fascism), and both wish to overthrow it through some kind of radical, “revolutionary” act. Differences Germany Nazi Germany was focused on racial nationalism, with a strong component of anti-semitism encoded into its political structure. Naziism has components of left wing social welfare (for ‘their race) but was essentially an extreme right wing movement. The definition of Germany was equal to where the ‘German race’ was supposedly from. Differences Italy Fascist Italy [Show More]
