How the Development of the Scientific Method Impacts Our Worldview The problem mentioned in the news article by CUNY Advanced Science Research Center (CUNY ASRC) is maintaining the integrity of sound... waves. The risk of waves traveling backwards or being thwarted by material defects as sound waves travel along the confines of topographical materials is a problem in physics. Solving this problem will facilitate the creation of lighter sound devices that consume less battery power, and can work in harsh conditions. Alù used scientific experiment following the initial method of geometrical asymmetries to produce topological pattern in 3-D-printed acoustic metamaterials. The aim of the test was to identify topological disorder during sound propagation. The initial observation was that in these materials, sound waves were constrained to move along the edges and around sharp bends, yet with a substantial drawback (CUNY ARSC, 2020). The weakness identified was that the waves were not fully confined as they could move either forward or backward while maintaining the same properties. The conclusion from these observations was that metamaterials’ defects reflect backwards the sound travelling along the confines of the objects, thereby interfering with the integrity of sound waves.
