SCI 228 WEEK 6: WHAT IS A HEALTHY BODY WEIGHT?
What is a healthy body weight? How do you define a healthy body weight?
For Discussions, create a 1 to 2 minute multimedia VIDEO that you record/create (DO NOT POST A LINK TO A VIDEO THAT SOMEONE ELSE HAS CREATED) and post it to
the discussion to respond to the above question.
Besides posting your individual multimedia piece, you must comment on 2 other students' multimedia pieces (you are not required to record your comments, but can choose to use the text comment feature).
Remember, they must still be quality posts. Simply stating, "Nice job, I agree" is not sufficient. Examples of quality posts include:
• Providing additional information to the discussion;
• elaborating on previous comments from others;
• presenting explanations of concepts or methods to help fellow students,

Excellent information Mandy, Janpaolo, Lindsey, and Shondrea. I agree with you that we need to show both men and women depictions of healthy bodies. As you stated Mandy, a scale is not necessary to determine if you are healthy. A scale is just one tool that may or may not be beneficial. How do we make a difference? How do we communicate that bodies come in many shapes and styles? What do you think?

Professor, that is a difficult but dynamic question. To me, I think that you do not have to have a certain weight to be seen or accepted as healthy, my family has many people with very thick body and dry skin and just like I have mentioned earlier in our chats I have developed an attitude of drinking much water and with my weight I work out regularly just to stay fit and not necessary lose weight to a certain amount. I have seen cases where people worry so much on their weight, I always tell my friends who talk much about how much they are not happy that not everyone can be skinny in this world, but you just must make sure you stay healthy by eating right, drinking much water and exercise.

I agree, a scale is not the determining factor when discussing health. We can make a difference by displaying different shapes and sizes in the public eye. As young girls we start out playing with Barbies. Barbie has come in one shape and size for many years, leading young girls to believe that they have to be this way to fit into society. We have to stop being so hypocritical of others as well. If we stop shaming others for being plus sized we can not assume that their unhealthy.

Just as many other classmates have stated, being healthy should not be tied to a number on a scale. We must also understand that the numbers we should pay attention to are the ones our doctors tell us to look out for such as blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar. It's important to know that eating right and exercising will keep these important numbers in a healthy range to ensure we live a long healthy life. Starving ourselves and going through all the crash diets to reach a number on a scale does more harm to our bodies and ultimately will not make us happy.

I think that eating disorders are not due to genetics. I think it is something in someone's brain that is just triggered. I think eating disorders are much like anxiety and depression. Something is triggered in the brain to make the person feel a certain way or want to do something that they normally wouldn't do. I know, from friends, that it is not something that they would have thought of doing without hearing about it from other people. For example, one friend of mine that had a very serious eating disorder said that she only started doing after being bullied about her weight. That is when she would stop eating or took even worse matters after eating something.

Shondrea, thanks for posting your discussion this week. I like the part when you said maintaining a healthy body weight is important to staying healthy. As people gain weight, their risks for high blood pressure, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, and heart disease all increase. Keep up the great work.

Hello Shondrea Your video presentation was excellent. I mainly liked how you talked about healthy lifestyles. As people tend to gain weight rather it be around the holidays or not. If you dont exercise and make smart healthy decisions your body tends to react back on your decisions attacking your health. Like you can development shortness of breath which can lead into beathing problems, highblood pressure, diabetes, heart attack.

Shondrea, I enjoyed viewing your power point presentation on what an ideal body weight is. You hit on all of the important points. People always mistake actually looking into the families background to see how they were raised and what type of diets or foods they ate. I agree you want to be at a healthy weight and try to maintain that by eating healthy meals and partaking in physical activities. So do you feel thus far that you have learned things about nutrition that you previously did not? I know I have.

Shonsrea, Your presentation is straight to the point. The point in your presentation that i found to be the most important in my opinion is, "As people gain weight, their risks for high blood pressure, diabetes, high blood cholesterol, and heart disease all increase. People who are overweight or obese may need to lose weight to improve their health." I feel this information is vital to everyone.

Class, based on the tools that JP indicated do you think that they should be used together or do you have a favorite? If a favorite, why is it your favorite?

Great video. I like that you actually included the body fat percentages for each group of person. The common misconception is weight is what matters to be healthy, but I disagree with that entirely. I personally am a firm believer that it comes down to the body fat percentage and also overall physique. Though these things don’t necessarily mean you are healthy, they seem to be more accurate that just going off of weight.

Travis, I agree to what you have said. Some people are over their weight limit but still living healthy. Althletes are an example, it is due to muscle weight is heavier than the fat weight.

Youre absolutely right, muscle does. When I go through my period of trying to be healthy and get in shape I do my best to ignore my weight changes to check progress and instead i pay more attention to how i feel and how my clothes fit me. Growing up I always heard of weight from my mother and as an adult it does tend to be a little difficult to not focus on weight. I now try and tell my mom to not focus on weight.

Great information Travis and Janpaolo! You are absolutely correct that weight is just a number. Unfortunately, we seemed to be so obsessed with that number. You could get to that number and still be dangerously unhealthy. Class, should we focus more on how we feel and how our clothes fit as Travis has suggested? What do you think?

Janpaolo, Excellent slide you hit all of the key points with this one I also like how you used different photos of not just people to get your point across. The funny thing about weight is a person can be small and think that their in shape but in reality they might be more of risk for something then someone they may look at and think that their not in shape or I should say healthy because they don't have a actual six pack popping out. The body is real funny and everyone is different period!

Prochia, I'm glad that you liked my presentation. You are absolutely right that people are different in many other ways. These standards are not 100% accurate and we shouldn't be bothered if we are not in standards. It's what our body that is telling us that really matters.

Janpaolo, This was a fantastic presentation. I knew of some of the other tools you mentioned but also learned of some that I had never considered. I personally think that we can get a much more accurate estimation of where we stand on having a healthy body weight if we combine the use of multiple tools rather than focusing on one singular thing. Thank you for this great video. Lisa

Jan-Paolo, That is by far the best presentation. It contained every bit of information that deals with an ideal healthy weight and properly how to manage your health. What did you use to create the presentation? It was put together so well. The information that you compiled and all of the statistics was incredible. I liked how it transitioned between slides as well. I actually stopped it a few times to read the important information that was provided. Again, great job.

Edward, thank you for your interest. I used the Adobe Spark. It's a free online tool for making video presentations like this. All you have to do is register, no downloaded necessary which I like the most. Let me know if you have any qiestions. At the end of the video presentation you can see the source of information that I used for the presentation. It has plenty more information in there. You got to check it out.

Hi Janpaolo, This was a great presentation, very detailed with great information. I enjoyed how you listed the different ways to measure body weight and , like Body mass index measures a person's weight in relation to their height. Waist hip ratio , waist to height ratio and body fat percentage. Overall all great post just one thing, the slides where going by fast I had to pause some of them to finish reading them.

Not everybody knows about the steps that you put on your presentation. I’m sure everyone in this class learned something new from your presentation.

Hi Lisa, I really like the presentation you posted on addictions, because everyone has a family member or a friend that needs to be educated on how to handle addictions. You were very informative on letting us know how addictions come about and how it can affect our lives.I hope more people read your presentation so they too will know some of the signs of an addictive nature and how to get a handle it before it gets to bad. Good job!

Janice, You make a very good point about how most everyone has a family member or friend who has struggled with addiction. This is actually a very personal issue that I have seen numerous people struggle with. This was definitely one of the factors that made me want to do a presentation on this topic.
Addiction for many people is extremely hard to overcome and some people never do get out of that cycle. It's a very sad thing for the loved ones who are affected by the addiction when they can't really do much to help. I have found the saying, "you can't help someone who doesn't want to be helped" to be a rather unfortunate truth in some cases. Thank you for taking the time to view my presentation. Lisa

Hi Tolisha, I looked at your presentation and I think you should research a little more on what healthy weight is. The BMI system was created in the 1800's and it is no longer very accurate, because a person bmI can be 24 or less and they can still be unhealthy. Also a person that has height can make their BMI look as if they're obese and in reality they're not . In other words the BMI system is really not an effective way anymore in determining whether a person is healthy or even obese.

Hi Lindsey, Thanks for sharing. I have to agree with others above. You did a great job creating this presentation. I liked the pictures chosen. That chart about the "ideal" weight was interesting. My weight was not on the chart for my height. I don't think I weighed that even when I was in high school. I'm happy with who I am.

Awesome post, Lindsey! I agree with your sentiments. People are definitely way more than their BMI's tell them they are and I think you made some great points using the examples in your video. -- Christine

Janice nice presentation, the formula for BMI was devised in the 1830s by Belgian mathematician AdolpheQuetelet. BMI is universally expressed in kg/m2. If imperial units are used (poundsand inches) then an additional conversion factor is applied.
