Module Three Exam Review Guide Lesson 3.01 Succession ● Explain in your own words what primary succession is (See page 1 from lesson 03.01) ○ Where (under what conditions) would primary succes... sion tend to occur? Be very specific ○ What would be evidence of primary succession? List all characteristics in detail Occurs when a new ecosystem is built from scratch. It is the evolution of a biological community’s ecological structure which plants and animals first colonize a lifeless habitat. Through their interactions they build simple biological community. Primary succession begins in barren areas like rock formations such as volcanoes or mountains or in a place with no organisms or soil. After a volcanic eruption, lava flows over an area and cools to form new rock. 1,000 years later a forest with different organisms and flowers are found in that area. ○ Define and give examples of a pioneer species - especially for a primary succession area Examples of Pioneer species: Species that arrive first in the newly created environment are called pioneer species. Algae, fungi, bacteria, lichens colonize on the bare rocks and provide organic materials for a higher level of colonization, while the planktons, phytoplankton’s and zooplanktons provide base at the shallow water for a higher level of succession. ● Explain in your own words what secondary succession is (See page 1 from lesson 03.01) Occurs when an ecosystem is rebuilt after a major disaster. Seasonal and climate changes also impact ecosystems and their inhabitants. ● Would primary or secondary succession have higher biodiversity faster and why? Secondary succession would have a wider biodiversity faster as there is already a basis for which lifecan exist, and it is first come first serve to many organisms ● Be able to interpret a migration map ● What are reasons for seasonal migrations? As warmer water temperatures shift, so do warm and cold loving marine species. Warmer water temperatures also deplete vital nutrients, which can cause species to migrate elsewhere to feed. Once those species shift, so must the predators that rely on them for [Show More]
