METAPHYSICS OF THICH NHAT HANH1 Abstract Metaphysics is a section of philosophy that involves the fundamental nature of existence and reality; accordingly, it offers abstract philosophical studies ... that are outside objective experiences. Through the fundamental nature of reality and existence metaphysics has bestowed us with prodigious a philosopher that is still influencing our world today. Vietnamese Ze n monk Thich Nhat Hanh is still perceived as one of the most influential spiritual leaders in the last 100 years. Thich Nhat Hanh was born in central Vietnam in 1926 and entered the Tu Hieu Temple in Hue city in 1942, accordingly at the tender age of 16 he was a novice monk. (Plum Village, n.d.) During the 1950’s he was committed to the movement to the evolution to reaffirm Vietnamese Buddhism, in essence, he was one of the “first bhikshus to study a secular subject at the University in Saigon”. (Plum Village, n.d., “Born in central…”) During the period of war, Vietnam was stricken by adversity and turbulence, particularly the opposing question under monks and nuns if they should continue their contemplative life or assist the people around them that are suffering under the war. Nevertheless, Thich Nhat Hanh made the decision to do both and founded the Engaged Buddhism movement and the School of Youth and Social Service. The School of Youth and Social Service was a group of volunteers that assisted the villages to teach children, rebuilding bombed houses and helping farmers to feed their families. (Steward, 2015) During 1961 to 1963 he traveled to the United States to teach Comparative Religion at Princeton University and went on to teach and research Buddhism at Columbia University. (Plum Village, n.d.) In 1966, he left Vietnam to reach out to religious and political leaders in the United States to end the war, ordinarily during his journey he met Martin Luther King, who called him an “Apostle of Peace” and nominated him for the Nobel Peace Prize in 1967.
