PHIL 1402 Discussion Assignment Unit 4 • Your FIRST of TWO posts this week: o Contrast Plato with Aristotle and decide whom you agree with more (and why) Aristotle was born in 384BCE, while Plat ... o was born in 428 BCE. Plato and Aristotle were both philosophers in ancient Greece, and they both studied matters of ethics, science, politics and more. Aristotle was influenced by Plato while Plato was influenced by Socrates, in different ways. Plato became Aristotle's teacher, and while Aristotle was learning under Plato, found many faults in Plato's theories and became his teacher's critic. Both of them based their opinions on four widely accepted beliefs: ▪ Knowledge must be of what is real ▪ The world experienced via the senses is what is real ▪ Knowledge must be of what is fixed and unchanging ▪ The world experienced via the senses is not fixed and immutable. (Jadesmg, 2018) While they both have some similarities and agreed on some beliefs, they have their differences as well. Plato sees forms as an abstract object that exists outside space and time, and that it is known only through the mind and not sense experience.
