Anh Nguyen TA: Ali Parvez 4/20/21 Post-Lab Discussion Theory: 1. Assume for a moment that during your work-up (your purification techniques) that you were able to successfully eliminate all of t ... he starting materials from your product. However, when you run your various tests, it would seem that your product isn't pure. What could be present in your product? (Hint: Think about the reaction that took place and what are the unique properties of the starting material under these conditions.) 2. Why do you wash the aldol condensation product crystals with 4ml acetic acid/ ethanol solution? 3. Would IR have been helpful in you determining the success of your synthesis? Why or why not? 4. Would C-NMR have been helpful in you determining the success of your synthesis? Why or why not? Q1. We assumed that this question is referring to the protocol outlined the Hayden-Mcneil where we reacted with the unknown ketones and aldehydes, as opposed to the aldol mixture that was actually carried out in the lab. Since all of our source ketones have an alpha proton, we know that our ketone species can form an enolate (a nucleophile). However, it can also behave as an electrophile to react with itself, at high abundance. Although we limit our aldehyde:ketone presence to be 4:1, there is still a slim chance that our ketone reacts to itself. [Show More]
