Due to the text saying, “At that hour, weighted down by drowsiness, the town was taking a
siesta.” It could possibly be something related to sleep.
2. What conclusions can you draw about the mother based on her behavior toward the priest
during the siesta?
You can draw out that the mother was worried about her son due to his actions. However, she
believed he had good intentions as well when she claimed, “I am his mother”.
3. What is the mother’s tone as she speaks to her daughter in the beginning? What effect does
this have?
The mother’s tone towards the beginning of the passage is very strict as she wants what’s
best for her daughter. Due to words and phrases such as, ‘Later, don’t take a drink anywhere
even when you’re dying of thirst. Above all, no crying’. It gives off the effect that she is very
strict, but also that she has good intentions for her daughter as well.

characterization?
The author juxtaposes the townspeople to the mother in order to deepen the
characterization by doing a “siesta”, which allows the mother to seem more mysterious.
