INTERNET 2 The New Renaissance: the Internet JITENKUMAR PATEL In 1994, John Starkman, the writer of the article “the new renaissance: the Internet” tried to predict the future of new technology called the Internet that internet would change people’s life like never before. He only consider positive aspects and completely ignore negative side of it. He imagine that all humankind would have access to internet in the near future and people will feel more connected, well knowledgeable. It will become hard for dictators and tyrants to control people’s mind by making them isolated, ignorant and scared, because “they can censor all the books and shut down all the newspapers, but it will be much harder to control the Internet” [ CITATION Sta94 \l 1033 ]. Yet nothing changes with North Korea, dictatorship is still going on in North Korea. According to International Telecommunication Union (ITU), in 2018 only 48% of the population has access to internet. There are still so many poor countries where people do not have access to internet because of the lack of electricity, illiteracy, poverty, language barrier, etc. even in country like china, the 2nd largest economy of the world, has so many government imposed restriction on access to websites. On the other hand, country like USA had started cyberspace program called PRISM to track online activities of not just terrorist groups and enemies but common US citizens in the name of national security threats [ CITATION Oli161 \l 1033 ]. US even spied on activities of international politicians and government officials to find out in advance to leverage on trade deals in WTO and G20.
