LABORATORY EXERCISE #11: Introduction to phycology: Green algae, diatoms & dinoflagellates Background information An overall appreciation for the simpler unicellular members of the group is provided ... by this laboratory exercise. The student is to compare and contrast properties of the unicellular algae with other protists studied. Algae show great diversity in their morphology, accessory pigmentation and habitats. Morphology, reserve foods, cell wall composition and pigmentation furnish the prime bases on which their classification is founded. As with other microbial groups, numerous scientific classifications exist but will not be introduced in this exercise. Instead common designations (green, blue-green, etc.) will be used for the groups. Learning objectives Understand the organization of the subkingdom Algae Be able identify basic types of Algae Be familiar with some representative algal genera Laboratory notebook o Title: Introduction to phycology o Introduction: Some information about Algae....... The purpose of this lab is to become familiar with the Algae. o Materials & Methods: Lab#/pages (outline and any deviations) o Results: Descriptions and drawings of slides and cell morphologies of representative algal genera. o Discussion: What are some of the distinguishing features of the representative algal genera observed in this lab?
