Physiology > Summary > Maslow's hierarchy of needs (All)
Abraham Maslow comes from the humanist perspective within psychology and as such he provides an apparently individualistic approach to the issue of motivation. Maslow was concerned to identify the n... eeds that ‘pushed’ people into behaviour beyond the most basic fulfilment of survival needs. He proposed a hierarchy of needs with basic survival needs at the bottom and other psychological needs towards the top According to this view, humans have evolved beyond the requirements of simple survival and are now driven towards greater achievements; the highest of these is self-actualization. Maslow qualifies his argument with four important points: 1. The needs at the bottom of the hierarchy must be fulfilled before the needs higher up can be considered; i.e. you must take care of your physical needs before you can begin to explore your cognitive/achievement or aesthetic needs. A lack of food may make it difficult to concentrate on your work. [Show More]
