PSYC 304 Final Paper: Phantom Limb - American Public University. A Graded. The relatively unknown syndrome known as “Phantom limb” is best described as an individual’s perception or feeling of ha ... ving a limb that is no longer part of his or her body due to injury or amputation. Injury and amputation are common reasons as to why individuals have lost or nonexistent limbs but missing or nonexciting limbs can also be attributed to birth defects which can cause a limb to never fully form (Goldstein, 2017). There have been many cases of individuals suffering from phantom limb syndrome that have been documented throughout medical history (Melzack, 1992). There are numerous symptoms that are known to affect individuals that suffer from phantom limb. The symptoms that can possibly affect said individuals are known to differ regarding the severity of the symptoms as well as the length or duration that the symptoms are experienced (Ramachandran & Hirstein, 1998). Unfortunately, there has been little known success as for as any sort of treatment for phantom limb syndrome. That is to include physiological treatments as well as psychological treatments (Melzack, 1992). The process of removing limbs using some form of amputation is in large part considered to be a surgery novelty. There are cases and instances that can be found throughout history dating back hundreds of years, that reference some sort of amputation or removal of limbs. [Show More]
