Exam 2 Study Guide Answers Chapter 6: Energy and Metabolism Free energy is the energy available for the system to use to do work. We use the level of free energy to determine if a chemical reac... tion is spontaneous or not. If the change in free energy is positive, then the reaction is endergonic, requiring energy input to be completed. A negative value for free energy resembles an exergonic reaction, meaning that the reaction is spontaneous. The first law states that energy cannot be created or destroyed, it can only change forms. This means that energy does not just disappear, even after it is used. It is released in another form, constantly being recycled. The second law states that entropy, or the disorder of the system, is always increasing, Exergonic reactions release energy, increasing the entropy of the system. Entropy is the amount of disorder or randomness in a system. The more entropy it has, the more likely it is to happen spontaneously. Something that has a low rate of entropy is highly unlikely to happen without some added energy. ATP is energy in the cell. It is used to power reactions within the cell. Enzymes are catalysts for chemical reactions that happen inside living things. They attach to proteins, jumpstarting a chemical reaction. Without the enzyme, the reaction will not happen. pH levels, temperature, and concentration of enzymes and substrates. Energy is needed for biological reactions to occur. In a biological reaction, enzymes are needed, for the reaction to produce as much product as possible. Chapter 7: How Cells Harvest Energy [Show More]
