Part 2: Report and Reflection
Purpose: Describe in complete sentences and in your own words, the purpose of this
experiment.
The purpose of this experiment was to learn the basics of protein synthesis while
helping people with chronic kidney disease.
Observations: Record three observations from the simulation.
1. the mRNA nucleotide triplets are called codons. The codons are written 5’
to 3’ direction.
2. Biosafety cabinet classes I, II and III differ in airflow velocity and patterns as
well as exhaust systems.
3. transcription is the first step of gene expression whereby a particular
segment of DNA is copied inti RNA bases.
Answer the questions below:
1. In your own words, describe the process of gene expression beginning from the
nucleus to the formation of the polypeptide sequence.
In transcription, the DNA sequence of a gene is copied to make an RNA
molecule. In translation, the sequence of the mRNA is decoded to specify the
amino acid sequence of a polypeptide.
2. Complete the table below:
Nucleic acid Amine Bases Present Location(s) in cell
DNA A,C,G,T Nucleus of the cell
RNA A,C,G,U Cytoplasm
3. Assume that RNA Polymerase will read the parental strand of DNA given here
and write the mRNA sequence that would result: - TATGCTTCCGTA -
The DNA sequence synthesize will be
5’- TATGCTTCCGTA – 3’ 5’- TATGCTTCCGTA – 3’ (parent strand)
3’-ATACGAAGGCAT-5’ (Daughter strand)
4. Reflection: Consider what you learned from this simulation. Reflect on three to
four key concepts that you learned in this lab exercise. How could the lessons
learned in this virtual lab relate to a real world situation in the community/world or
your future career? Be specific in your answer (this should require 5-10
sentences).
