Purpose This experiment was conducted to determine the unknown concentration of a solution of sodium hydroxide by titration. The volumetric method of analysis was to use Oxalic acid solution with kn ... own concentration. The oxalic acid to be used in this solution was to be prepared using a given mass of the substance and measuring the volume of the aqueous solution of this solid. Background Information Titration is a quantitative method used in the determination of the quantity of one substance through the addition of a measured amount of the second substance. The basis of this method is the reaction of two compounds used in the process. One of the compounds forms a solution of known concentration and the other forms a solution of unknown concentration. The setup of the experiment is such that a given volume say 25 ml is pipetted in a conical flask. An indicator is added to the solution to mark when the reaction between the compounds ends. This point is usually called the endpoint. Theoretically, the equivalence point should mark the end of the titration. At this point, the amounts of the two reactants are stoichiometrically equivalent (Freeman et al. 2018). The difference between the endpoint and equivalence point is a result of indicator properties.
