Most teachers quickly come to understand that teaching is not just about academic development, but also about emotional, behavioral, and sometimes even spiritual development – in essence a teacher... is, to some extent, a second parent to his students. With this understood, it is only natural that the students’ biological and/or legal parents be included in the work that is done between teacher and student. This is particularly true in the event that a problem arises with a student, but the extent of parental involvement and the developmental and academic merits of such involvement are complicated issues. With the consideration of many factors, it seems best for a teacher to have a three-tiered action plan that successively moves from a student-centered intervention to a parent-centered intervention and then, if necessary, to a specialist-centered intervention. In a scenario that Hue and Li (2008) describe, Miss Lee has observed that a student of hers, Siu Ming, who is normally diligent and enthusiastic, has seemed to have lost interest in his studies (p. 166). When Miss Lee asks Siu Minh about this change he seems reticent and only offers perfunctory answers, which makes Miss Lee worry that there is a deeper problem that needs to be addressed (Hue & Li, 2008, p. 166).
