December 27, 20202 Approaches in Activating Students’ Prior Knowledge Prior knowledge is information that we already know before learning new knowledge or information. It is a previous experience from what we heard, read, and saw before that related to the topic of the new learning. The human system functions similar to a computer: It receives information, stores it in memory, and retrieves it as necessary (Schunk, 2012). In the classroom, the students are bringing different learning backgrounds and prior knowledge to gain new learning. By being able to know their prior and background knowledge of the lesson, it will be easier for the teacher to plan and design the learning. From the reading of Strangman, Hall, and Meyer (2004), there are six evidence-based approaches identified that teachers can consider using to better engage students in the classroom: Reflection and recording, Interactive discussion, Answering questions, K-W-L, CONTACT-2, Interpretation of topic-related pictures.
