It has even changed the way we respond to natural disasters from charity organizations being able to reach large audiences for support to people being able to contact loved ones that may have been effected that they would have no other way of getting in contact with. You could say social media has saved lives. Social media allows us to get updates of events happening in a near real time environment from personal peoples updates to news outlets and the social media applications itself alerting individuals of events that could be dangerous in the area. For example, Facebook often has a œMarked Safe feature when people are near events that could be dangerous. œwhen earthquake and tsunami rocked Japan on Mar. 11, 2011, millions around the globe to used social media to search for family and friends, as well as get updates on a situation that was very frightening at the time, given the damage to the nuclear reactor. Similarly, in a recent New York area earthquake, residents were receiving tweets from the epicenter of the event before the tremors had reach them.
