Lecture 11 Medication review (helps and hints) - Humulin 70/30: - Humulin is a type of insulin - Humulin 70/30 is a mixture of regular “R” insulin and normal (intermediate) “N” insulin - ... 70/30 is percentages - 70% normal insulin - 30% regular insulin - Mixing insulin’s in the same syringe: - You can mix insulin’s in the same syringe but it has to be done to a specific order. - First: inject air into the normal “N” insulin vial - Second: inject air into the regular “R” insulin vial - Third: draw up the regular “R” insulin - Fourth: draw up the normal “N” insulin - You always have to draw up the regular “R” insulin before the normal “N” insulin. - Think, RN’s (registered nurses) always draw up “R” before “N”. - Needle size and gauge for different injections: - IM injections: - “I” looks like the number 1. - Pick the needle where the size and gauge both have a 1 - 21 gauge, 1 inch. - Subcutaneous injections:- “S” looks like the number 5 - Pick the needle where the size and the gauge both have a 5 - 25 gauge, 5/8th inch - Heparin vs. Coumadin (warfarin) - Heparin: - Given IV or Subcutaneously - Works immediately - Cannot be given for longer than 3 weeks (except for Lovenox) - Antidote is Protamine sulfate - Lab test that monitors heparin is PTT (Partial Prothrombin Time) - Can be given to pregnant women [Show More]
