All About The NCLEX The NCLEX is a computerized adaptive test (CAT), and it is designed to determine if nursing candidates meet minimum competency for entry into nursing practice. Minimum competency simply means that the test-taker is able to make safe and sound nursing judgements and has a demonstrated ability to apply what they’ve learned in nursing school. It’s all about measuring the test-taker’s ability to make careful decisions through the application of nursing knowledge, as well as analyzing data that is presented in each test question. The NCLEX, as we know it today, went live in 1994 after the National Council of State Boards of Nursing (NCSBN) spent seven years conducting numerous studies and trials to make sure the new computerized NCLEX was meeting the needs of keeping the public safe. This new way of testing helped to increase candidate academic integrity, improved accuracy in scoring and made the process for recording results, and issuing nursing licenses, much easier for the State Boards of Nursing. Currently, both the RN and PN NCLEX exams have a minimum of 60 questions that each candidate must answer before any decisions are made regarding passing or failing the exam. The maximum number of questions is 130, and the time limit for the exam is four hours. These changes went into effect as a result of the COVID-19 pandemic so that testing centers can accommodate social distancing guidelines and enhance their infection control practices. Before the pandemic, the minimum number of questions for the NCLEX-RN was 75, with a maximum of 265, and a six-hour time limit. The NCLEX-PN exam had a minimum of 85 questions, with a maximum of 205, and a five-hour time limit. The content and difficulty of the exam have not changed as a result of these modifications. Additionally, all pilot and research questions have been removed from the current NCLEX exams, and therefore every single question on the exam counts! On Oct. 1st, 2020 - the NCSBN will be updating the test to include a minimum of 75 questions for both the RN and PN exams, and increasing the maximum to 145. They are also increasing the testing time from 4 hours to 5 hours. This change is due to the reintroduction of the pilot questions so that the NCSBN can collect data regarding the efficacy of the questions to be added into the next test plan.
