INTRODUCTION: Glycogen is a large, branched polymer comprised of glucose residues that can be broken down to produce molecules of glucose once energy is required. It is the principal storage form of glucose within mammalian cells. The glucose residues that make up glycogen are linked by α-1,4- glycosidic bonds, with branches at about every tenth residue joined by α-1,6-glycosidic bonds. As a result it is highly branched which increases its solubility and allows it be metabolized at a quicker rate. Glycogen is hydrated with three to four parts water and granules of diameter 10-40 nm are formed in the cytoplasm (Biology Dictionary, 2019). The structure is shown below: (Freeman et. al, 2012) The two forms of glycogen include proglycogen and macroglycogen, with proglycogen being the precursor of macroglycogen (Lawrie, 1979). These are different sizes of glycogen that are dependent on its solubility in acid, with similar protein composition but varying carbohydrate composition. Proglycogen is smaller at a size of <400kDa while macroglycogen is larger at a sizeof 107 Da. The sites at which glycogen can mostly be found include the liver (up to 10%) and skeletal muscle, with the concentration being higher in the liver than in the muscle, with the muscle containing more glycogen by weight [Show More]
