Report for Experiment #16 Electric Field and Electric Potential Jingyi Yu Lab Partner: Qianqian Zhang TA: Chi Zhang, Kaihua Ji Oct. 16, 2015 Abstract It is easy to observe from our daily life t ... hat two charged objects with the same charge sign repel each other and those with different charge signs attract each other, and we know from Newton’s First Law that an object needs a force applied on it in order to change its velocity. However, we cannot directly see the force between the two charged bodies, then how do these attraction or repulsion happen? We introduce the concept of electric field and potential field. The potential field is a scalar field which is related to energy between charges, whilst the electric field is a vector fieldwhich is related to the forces between charges. And we are totally able to convert between these two fields mathematically, and that’s what we want to explore in our following experiment. Introduction In this experiment we want to investigate on the potential field and electric field distribution between both parallel and concentric electrodes. Since the strength of electric field is hard to measure or observe directly, we first need to visualize potential fields by drawing equipotential lines on the paper in the region between two electrodes in both cases and then use equation 16.1 and 16.3 given by the textbook to deduce the distribution of electric field with the difference of electric potential between two points and distance between these two points. To be specific, in Investigation 1, we drew the equipotential lines for 3V, 4V, 5V, 6V, and 7V through measuring, then measured the distances Δx between each of the equipotential lines. With the two values above, we then calculate the electric field E of midpoints between each pair of neighboring equipotential lines with corrected x. Then we graphed the electric potential versus distances from origin x, and the strength of electric field E versus x, trying to see how V and E change as the distance from the electrode.
