Importance of Kolcaba’s Comfort Theory Nursing theory is a framework of doctrine and principals which help to develop nursing knowledge. “Nursing as a discipline needs theories which are develop... ed through nursing research, tested and modified in practice, and finally refined again in order to guide current nursing practice and establish a paradigm status for the profession and the discipline as a whole.” (McEwen, &Wills, 2005) Working in the trenches of nursing as a trauma nurse in an emergency department I have never personally been involved with the development, teaching or implementing of nursing theory. My knowledge on the subject is limited to the information gathered in the classroom over the last two weeks. However, on the contrary, throughout the years of delivering direct patient care I have implemented many nursing theories incognizant of my role for advancing and sustaining nursing as a profession. This article will explore one of my favorite and most used theories, Kolcaba’s comfort theory. Examine the importance of nursing theory and how it effects the nursing profession and patients. Discuss Kolcaba’s purpose(s) of the theory, key concepts, and how it addresses nursing’s metaparadigm. Finally, relate Kolcaba’s nursing theory to real world situations through personal experience.
