Final Exam Paper (Word Count-742)
Parse (1992) states that the purpose of nursing is to reveal meaning in human experience
from the individual’s viewpoint. Congruently, this reflection divulges my nursing
philosophical view, built from nursing practices, life experiences, human interactions, and
reflection.
Personal Philosophical View
My philosophical views about nursing science and practice align closely with the
perspective of intermodernism. The intermodernism philosophical view intersects the aspects of
modernism and postmodernism and renders an extension of clinical knowledge enhanced
through practice outlook (Bajjani-Gebara & Reed, 2016). The intermodernism philosophical
view retains an emphasis on the individual or organization as possessing morality and dignity
while recognizing the relative effects of the sociocultural, political, and historical impacts on
people, communities, and institutions (Reed & Shearer, 2018). I believe that knowledge is
acquired through the varied realms of scientific research, practice experiences, and life
lessons. Accordingly, intermodernism values the diversity of knowledge in forms of empirical
evidence, personal nursing knowledge, and research evidence (Reed, 2018). I am an advocate
for employing nursing knowledge and science for the betterment of humanity and the
environment. Likewise, intermodernism accounts for processes that result from the actions
and discourses of nurses used for the well-being of others (Reed & Shearer, 2018). I prefer the
non-radical, openness, and coordinated perspectives presented in intermodernism (Reed &
Shearer, 2018). Thus, my philosophical views state that nursing practice is the art and science
of holistic care, steered by the values of humanity, autonomy, and caring. Further, nursing is
an intellectual discipline that incorporates clinical practice actions, under the guidance of
theoretical concepts. Subsequently, nurses use critical-thinking and contemporary scientific
knowledge to translate information and technologies into professional practice.
Conceptualization of a Practice Problem
The nursing profession is stressful, wherein nurses render care by investing emotionally
without attention to self-care. The nursing profession is in a period of transition due to nursing
personnel shortages, job dissatisfaction, staffing inadequacies, and a decline in those choosing
nursing as a profession (Richardson, 2018). Due to the repetitive exposure to highly stressful
environments, nurses are at risk of developing compassion fatigue (CF), secondary to
physical, mental, and emotional stressors. Consequently, CF affects patient and
organizational outcomes (Pfaff et al., 2017). Hence, it is essential to have an increased
awareness of this practice problem.
The theoretical perspective provides a framework to organize the multitude of data
collected from interaction with the client, a direction to analyze this data and to interpret all
the information. To understand and provide intervention to the problem of CF about nursing,
one must apply it to a nursing framework or theory. The Theory of Unpleasant Symptoms
(TOUS) is based on the premise that there are commonalities in different symptom
experiences among different groups in different situations. The theory integrates existing
knowledge about a variety of symptoms to better prepare nurses in symptom management
(McEwen & Wills, 2017). Since symptoms of CF are primarily based on individual
perception, this theory is thus applicable at the level of the individual. However, it also
