Civil Engineering > Lab Report > CE341A Sand Cone Method full lab report (All)
Introduction: When engineers design different structures, one of the things that they look at is the soil that is on site. Often times it is necessary to compact the soil to specific dry unit weight... s based on lab tests. It is very important that the contractor meets or exceeds the compaction specified on the design. In order to make sure that the contractor is meeting the minimum required they have to test the soil to figure out what it is compacted to. In order to do this, they use the very simple method called the Sand Cone Method. This method works by first digging a small circular hole in the soil about 3 inches deep. They then record this weight. They then take the sand cone and place it over the hole and open the value and fill the hole with sand. By knowing the dry unit weight of the sand and the weight that it took to fill the hole we can calculate the volume of the whole. Since we know have the volume of the hole and the weight of the soil from the hole we can calculate the unit weight of the soil, and if we dry the soil we can find the dry unit weight. [Show More]
