The cardiovascular system is the organ system within the body that facilitates the circulation of blood. It is sometimes referred to as the blood-vascular, circulatory, or cardiac system. œIt consists of the heart, which is a muscular pumping device, and a closed system of vessels called arteries, veins, and capillaries (Introduction to the Cardiovascular System, n.d.). This system is responsible for the distribution of oxygen and other important substances to the cells, organs, and tissues throughout the body. Maintaining temperature, among other functions, and helping the body meet the demands of activity, stress, and exercise are also the cardiovascular systems job. Cardiologists are the health care professionals that are typically responsible for the diagnosis, treatment, and management of patients with cardiovascular problems. Often, these professionals work alongside the primary care physician! How It Works The cardiovascular system can be broken down into systemic circulation and pulmonary circulation. The systemic system provides vital substances to the body and collects wastes, while the pulmonary system is where carbon dioxide is released from the blood and oxygen enters the blood.
