Despite when people believe they possess good intentions, the main protagonists Victor Frankenstein from Mary Shelley’s novel Frankenstein and Mr. Kurtz from Joseph Conrad’s novel Heart of Darkn... ess, show that similar behaviour and mistakes lead to a regretful end. Similar actions by some world leaders who are well intentioned still result in ultimate evil. We recognize and judge these types of people after seeing their obsessive nature, lack of responsibility, and ultimate end. When a person is unwilling to accept the consequences of their actions, the power behind the drive inevitably leads to disastrous results. Frankenstein was overpowered by his obsessive nature. This is shown to the fullest even when he was a child. As he read more and more philosophy as a child he says “Curiosity, earnest research to learn the hidden laws of nature, gladness akin to rapture, as they were unfolded to me, are among the earliest sensations I can remember.” (22), which shows that even when he was young, Frankenstein had an unhealthy obsession with “forbidden” knowledge. Victor’s obsession only grew as he aged. It even pushed him to collect dead body parts to make the monster, he explains, “The dissecting room and the slaughter-house furnished many of my materials; and often did my human nature turn with loathing from my occupation, whilst, still urged on by an eagerness which perpetually increased, I brought my work near to a conclusion.” (39), which proves that Frankenstein’s obsession pushed him past caring about how much the body parts disturbed him, he only cared for making the monster. His fascination with defeating death blinded him to the issues that might arise had he’d been successful.
