Smoking during pregnancy is very common in the town I live in and serve. Patients that I have encountered in the past do not feel that smoking during pregnancy is a real threat, so I would like to increase awareness. Smoking is a serious problem in all patient populations. Most people know that smoking causes cancer, heart disease, and other major health problems. Smoking during pregnancy causes additional health problems, including premature birth, certain birth defects, and infant death ("Tobacco Use and Pregnancy | Reproductive Health | CDC", 2017). However, smoking during pregnancy is the single most preventable cause of illness and death among mothers and infants ("During Pregnancy | CDC", 2018). Not only does smoking make it harder for a woman to get pregnant, but women who do smoke during pregnancy are more likely than other women to have a miscarriage ("Tobacco Use and Pregnancy | Reproductive Health | CDC", 2017). Smoking can also cause problems with the placenta— the placenta can separate from the womb too early, causing bleeding, which is dangerous to the mother and baby. Smoking during pregnancy can cause a baby to be born too early or to have low birth weight—making it more likely the baby will be sick and have to stay in the hospital longer ("Tobacco Use and Pregnancy | Reproductive Health | CDC", 2017).
