This was done by watching the differences between performance and learning goals. A learning goal could be a goal during which a person seeks to extend competence levels or master new skills. A performance goal could be a goal during which a person seeks to keep up positive judgments about their ability and avoid the negative. Previous research says that children with helpless responses linked failure with low ability and overall had low performance.
