They do not discriminate whom they affect. However, they do take a heavier toll on certain populations. In my community, lack of education due to poverty is a social determinant of health that directly affects rates of sexually transmitted diseases among young adults. According to the United States Census Bureau, in 2019, 13.6 % of McDowell County, North Carolina's population, lived in poverty. Those who live in poverty have less access to education. Public school in my community is the primary means of sexual education among young adults. In 2014, 40% of high school students reported they had had sex, and 54% of those sexually active reported they did not use a condom.
