I will explain the manner in which these theories relate to crime in general. I will determine one additional theory that could explain the cause of digitalcrime and non-digital crime and provide information that will support my response. First, we will discuss Choice Theory. The two theories that I believe researchers could use to explain the cause of digital crime is the Choice Theory and the Psychological Theories. In order to understand digital crime we need to know what it is; Cybercrime and computer crime, is any illegal activity that involves a computer or network-connected device, such as a mobile phone [Rou16]. Digital crime/cybercrime has been divided into four categories: crimes in which the computing device is the target, crimes in which the computer is used as a weapon, the computer as incidental to the crime and crimes associated with the prevalence of computers. According to Digital Crime and Digital Terrorism digital crimes inspire fear in consumers and lead to lack of trust in the security and safety of e-commerce and online business transactions (Taylor, Fritsch, and Liederbach, 2015). Digital Theories is when researchers undertake the daunting task of explaining why digital crime takes place. Psychiatrist William Glasser is credited for developing the choice theory. Choice theory is when an individual commits a crime because he or she makes a rational choice to do so by weighing the risks and benefits of committing the act (Taylor, Fritsch, and Liederbach, 2015). Mr. Glasser states that individuals are driven by genes which will gratify five basic needs: survival, love and belonging, power, freedom and fun.
