Although my childhood was spent in a mostly white, Republic middle Georgia town, the county high school I attended was 70% black and about 10% Hispanic. It was a controversial issue with some parents in my area and the difference in race was built up and often talked about in a negative light. After graduating high school, I immediately relocated to the Atlanta area for college, a city that has been said to have more diversity within its limits than the ratio of diversity within the United States as a whole.
