Assessments are also imperative when teachers are seeking information on the language proficiencies of our English Language Learners. These assessments drive the type of language instruction that takes place in the classroom and will help in meet the language learning needs of the students. There are many types of tests that we can use to guide the language learning for our students. In this paper, I will address three types of assessments: the WIDA Online Screener, ELPAC, and the TOEFL ITP. I will explain how the test is used, tests specifics, sample questions, how it is administered, and the role of the teacher. I will also share some similarities and differences among these assessments. Language Proficiency Assessments World Class Instructional Design Assessment (WIDA) The World Class Instructional Design Assessment or WIDA, is an online screener used to assess K-12 learners to determine whether a learner qualifies for ELL services within the school system. There are four areas of language that are specifically designed in determining the learners need. They are listening, reading, speaking, and writing.
