One theory that has influenced my practice regarding my values and goals is Florence Nightingales Environmental Theory. This theory takes on a Holistic approach, or an approach that focuses on the patient as a whole. This theory also focuses on the effects the environment has on a patient. When we discuss the environment, we refer to the patients surroundings. This does not just mean the room, but also the bed, the color of the walls, the nurses, the doctors as well as the support staff. All of these things influence the patient. The sounds, and the smells. The small things that we do not always take the time to think about. Each detail plays its own part in influencing our patients. Florence Nightingale wanted people to understand that a clean room, an organized room, makes the person and the staff feel better about the care being provided to them. I work hard to ensure that my surrounding maintain order to reduce my stress, help me plan my day and complete my tasks in an orderly fashion. (Jacob, 2016) When staff can easily access their items of need, the flow of the tasks will be smooth, and this will keep stress levels under control. In addition, Nurses were required to wear white, white is a clean color, easily noting any dirt or debris on the uniform as well as the environment.
